Understanding Matthew Part 1

Nothing of note till Chapter 5. Chapter 5 is Christ talking to Jews. This is not a perscription to Gentiles. What do I agree with?

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Frankly this seems like nonsense. Perhaps poorly translated.

4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

God will comfort us through life. I believe emotional support is God’s primary purpose.

5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

If you interpret meek as humble then agree that it brings good things

6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

If you do what you think to be true and just God will fill your heart. Agree that either God or alignment with your values will produce the result.

7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

Hard to expect mercy when you will not give it.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Nonsense or disagree depending on interpretaion.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

Spiritual and Material prosperity can flourish during peace. Too much material and spiritual suffers.

10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Suffering on Earth will produce rewards in Heavan.

11-21 Basically says you will suffer and be rewarded in heaven. You should live by these rules both in law and spirit. Be a good humble example to others.

22 Mostly nonsense. Does mention an action can send you to hell. Doesn’t fit the once saved always saved model.

23-26 Resolve issues with others directy is important before bringing in authorities.

27 A good idea in general

28 Disagree

29-30 Cast out bad influences from your community. I agree.

31-32 Divorce is undesirable. Not sure about the rest. Barren women should be divorcable.

33-37 Agree depending on interpretation. Your word should be your bond. Which I interpret as never give your word. Bit of a mess. Don’t agree that one should not cuss. Too much lowers your status.

38-42 Disagree vehemently. Do agree medium to minor conflicts should lean toward mercy and tolerance.

43-48 Sort of agree. Better to bring your enemy to see reason or at least to desist rather than start a cycle of revenge. Revenge is usually destructive to both sides rather than constructive.
